“It were hard work, but it were enjoyable. When you’re out in the field, singling turnips and things like that, it were pleasant. You were your own boss.”

Peter Woodhouse, farmer in the Mayfield Valley.
In this book, based on an oral history project conducted by the Friends of the Porter Valley, memories of growing up, working, and living in a Yorkshire community are documented. Through memories such as skipping Sunday School to collect snails, milking your first cow as a right of passage, exploring haunted houses, being clobbered with a plimsoll for misbehaving, or watching bombs fall on Sheffield, a glimpse of twentieth-century life in the valleys is offered.
