Information about Upper Whiteley Woods in Sheffield. Part of the FoPV area. Whiteley Woods - Upper This is the section of valley from Armchair Bridge up to Carr Bridge, just above Forge Dam. Walkers leave the formal pathways completely, entering a wooded area, the River flowing down its natural bed with rough paths on either side. Alder, beech, oak, sycamore, ash, hawthorn and holly, make up this area of ancient woodland, providing habitats for a wide variety of invertebrates and shelter for owls, hedgehogs, foxes and badgers. This area is alive with songbirds. Grey wagtails can be seen foraging along the valley floor and dippers perch characteristically on rocks midstream then dive into the water, walking against the currents in search of small invertebrates which abound in the river. Wire Mill On the left side of the river, steps or a steep path lead up to Wire Mill Dam. This used to be a popular location for anglers and model boat enthusiasts in the past. In early spring you may hear your first chiff-chaff, followed by warblers, swallows and swifts. On the Dam itself can be seen coots, moorhens, mallards and mandarins and as summer arrives so do the waterlilies. On the path beside the Dam is a memorial to Thomas Boulsover, the first owner of Wire Mill, who in the 18th century, invented Sheffield Plate. The path upstream runs alongside a man-made channel or goit. This is the supply for Wire Mill Dam and takes water from the Porter just below Forge Dam, creating a high fall of water, sufficient to accommodate two wheels each 11 metres in diameter. Secret Door Before the road bridge at Forge Dam there are 3 tiers of gabions lining the far side of the River. They protect the bank when the River is in flood. On your left as you reach the road is a 3-storey building in which workers lived and produced buttons made from Sheffield Plate. If you take an immediate left turn on reaching the tarmac road and climb up Ivy Cottage Lane you will see on your right steps leading to a carved wooden door which bears the inscription…. ‘Chestnut, Plane & Sycamore, who or what lies behind the door?’ This unusual feature hides a concrete support which stabilises the tree. Buildings There are almost 50 nests in the rookery on the right just before the playground. The rooks can be seen in daytime out on fields high in the valley and return noisily to roost at night. Some of Thomas Boulsover’s ancillary buildings still exist at Forge Dam although the Forge itself has gone. Here a large wheel drove two tilt hammers and a smaller wheel operated blowers for the furnaces. The popular Forge Dam café is housed in a structure which was once Sharrow Vale Wesleyan Reform Chapel. On the Dam there is often a motionless grey heron amongst the reeds keeping watch on the duck families and throughout the year there may be an opportunity to spot a kingfisher or two.

The Endcliffe Park Toad, seen above, is a well known piece of public art located a few metres below the Cafe. The latest version was installed on 5th December 2024 after almost a year of fundraising by FoPV, and it is made of metal by a local sculptor called Jason Thompson, who has also designed and made other works of art in Sheffield such as the 'Chair' in the Rivelin Valley. This is the third toad made by Jason to sit on this base. The first toad, in 1997, was jointly funded as a celebration of nature - by the Off the Shelf Literary festival, and Sheffield Wildlife Trust. Both wooden toads eventually deteriorated, returning them to nature, each lasting about 12 years. The remains of the 2012 toad can still be seen beside the holly bush beside the river. Reflecting the original heritage, the current toad sits on the open pages of a book, as with the previous two wooden toads of 1997 and 2012. Sculptor Jason Thomson, and Glyn Mansell of FoPV, visited Greystones Primary School and talked to pupils in Y2 and Y5 about the Toad project. The pupils were fascinated and later produced art and written work which was displayed in school and the Tropical Pavilion at the Botanical Gardens one Saturday in September 2024 . A selection of this work is inscribed onto the new ‘pages’ supporting the metal 2024 toad, some of which can be seen in the pictures below. The Watch We are often asked about the watch, so we asked Jason to explain. "It’s about time and the frozen nature of sculpture as the world changes around it. The new iron toad , if left alone, could last for ten or twenty thousand years compared to 12 to 15 years for his two wooden incarnations. The frog Prince of fairy tales also comes into it, but as he’s a common toad (Bufo Bufo ) maybe a nice watch is preferable?" Close-ups of the books

FoPV vid utmärkelserna Under åren har FoPV och dess medlemmar funnit sig nominerade till och vunnit olika utmärkelser. 2013 English Heritage Angel Awards Shepherd Wheel nominerat för Heritage Rescue. 2012 Sheffield Telegraph Environment Awards 2012 VINNARE i kategorin Individ för Ros Hancock som ett erkännande för allt hennes arbete för Friends of the Porter Valley English Heritage Angel Awards: Certifikat för beröm till Friends of the Porter Valley för deras arbete med att rädda Shepherd Wheel 2011 Sheffield Telegraph Environment Awards 2011 VINNARE i kategorin Community för Friends of the Porter Valley Andra prestationer och aktiviteter Forskning, rapportskrivning och publicering. Organiserade månatliga promenader; kvartalssamtal mm. Höjd profil genom kontakt med; Andra vänner/intressegrupper, Sheffields kommunfullmäktigetjänstemän och rådsmedlemmar, ungdomsgrupper etc. Pengarinsamling för Shepherd Wheel och Forge Dam-restaureringar. Skapade gemenskapsevenemang t.ex Duck Race, Höst- och vintermässor, deltog i Sharrow Vale gatumarknader. Skapat två gånger i månaden bevarandegrupp, som arbetar med rådets personal att göra underhåll av skogsmark, plantering av träd/lökar/vilda blommor, flod/goit röjning i dalarna, byggt och reparerat stigar, trappor och bänkar. Endcliffe Park: Skapande av vuxengym, Hjälpte till att installera Parkour-utrustning och, ombyggnad av lekplats. Shepherd Wheel: Återställde Shepherd Wheel i funktionsdugligt skick i samarbete med andra intressenter. Nu öppet för allmänheten på helger och helgdagar; fri entré. Wire Mill Dam: Uppmuntrade och hjälpte Sheffield City Council att reparera läckor och rekonstruera huvudstrucken. Forge Dam: stödd kaféombyggnad, förbättring av toaletter, röjning och underhåll av område som ett led i den övergripande restaureringen av närområdet. Restaurering av (omdöpt) Oliver's Bridge. Förbättring av Common Lane open space som en urban naturpark.
