FoPV Work Morning Roundup - Tuesday 24th February 2026

It is the 75th anniversay of Festival Woodland in May so it was apt for some tidying up in readiness. Read the report from John below.

We had one of the best days this year, for the first time it really felt that spring was just around the corner. The birds certainly thought so judging by the amount of birdsong.

Today's main task was to clear back to a depth of a metre the main Festival Woodland path of the accumulated brambles and dead growth and remove the soil which had encroached over the path edge. It's amazing how quickly this builds up despite regular attention. The  daffodils were in no danger of being trampled as they've grown so high.

Chris cleared stray brambles from the edge of the path behind the playground as there are large numbers of daffodils which would otherwise be smothered, and moved a fair amount of surplus soil from the path to the top of the slide which had suffered from erosion. Alongside the slide various perennial plants and a wild flower mix had been planted in the autumn but the following week heavy rain wreaked havoc with the area so we may have to do some replanting in the near future. Also the top of a large sapling had been snapped by the wind so this was cleared away and cut up.

There was still half an hour to spare so the laurel from past the playground was drastically cut back on both sides of the river so there is now a clear view of the short tunnel and the fine stonework edging the river. Martin managed to rescue a few stray branches from the river and all the brash was cleared and piled up.

So a great morning's work and many thanks to the 9 volunteers who worked with such a will.
