We have been following the recent works at Forge Dam closely and with considerable interest. Over the past few years, since attempts to repair the sluice began at the end of 2023, there has been a mixture of optimism and disappointment for us all. It became apparent that those attempts did not achieve the intended result, and we are saddened to learn that the latest works also appear not to have delivered the desired outcome. Nevertheless, there is one positive aspect: the repointing of the dam wall undertaken as part of the recent works has improved the integrity and stability of the wall which is encouraging for the future.

The latest works did not include any attempt to block the sluice, which was a concern we raised before the works commenced. The reason for this being that the sluice was already blocked by silt and that the leak was occurring through the wall. It was also stated that these works were not expected to stop the leak entirely. As matters now stand, the volume of water leaking through appears to remain substantial, although flow rates will still need to be monitored in order to provide clear evidence.

This week, along with our local councillor, we were able to meet with council representatives from various departments to receive a full update and explanation regarding the works undertaken to date, and to discuss how the matter can be progressed. We believe they were left in no doubt as to our disappointment and, in fairness, they appear to share that concern to a significant extent. Without going into excessive detail, lessons have been learned, and we have been assured that processes will be strengthened at all stages going forward. The representatives also made clear that they remain committed to seeing this repair project completed to everyone’s satisfaction. We are therefore confident that the project will not be abandoned.

In summary, the next steps will be for the council to enter into discussions with the contractor and other relevant parties to determine how best to proceed, including identifying appropriate sources of funding. We have asked for regular updates and will be asking for another face to face meeting.

This is clearly not the positive update we had hoped to provide. However, we hope to be able to share a further update by mid to late December, although, given the Christmas period, this may extend into early January.
